the elephant metaphor is confusing, although i see hints of 'tree and the
forest' metaphor -

perhaps if you rephrased your questions (SO INTERESTING!) in terms of a
relation with trees, or the forest,

("can't see the forest for the trees" being an obsession with detail, and

 "can't see the trees for the forest" being the wider-generalized position
of abstractions?

i'm romantic, what the hell. i need my dichotomies. <grin> )
