i agree, diane, that the word identity is not adequate to the task.
something like
making identifications
better expresses this process, this (perhaps uniquely) human activity---
we are continuously identifying our Selves and Others.
i would push this further--
as Judith Butler says about gender, so to identity
the description of someone's identity all too easily becomes the
explanation of who we/they are limited to being.
