Since the Educational Researcher buried the announcement of this presession and got the dates wrong, I thought I would spam XMCA to inform you of our session on Semiotic Methods. Cunningham, Linda Rogers, Gary Shank and Susan Tucker Dates: Saturday, April 22, 9:00-5:00; Sunday, April 23, 9:00-5:00 Fee: AERA Member-$110; Nonmember-$130 Abstract: This pre-session will introduce semiotic methods of educational research. Semiotics -- from an ancient Greek word meaning sign -- is the study of signs and sign use, including all forms of symbolic systems and processes, signaling and communicating behavior, and their biological and social functions. Semiotics is both a multidisciplinary conceptual framework and a language of scholarship throughout the world. Semiotics may also be regarded as a constellation of beliefs, values and techniques that serve as a unifying matrix for all knowledge. Much work is underway to lay out the theoretical and methodological foundations for semiotics. Our goal for this course is to provide educational researchers with methods derived from semiotics to analyze how people understand phenomena, organize them mentally, and communicate that understanding by sharing it with others. The instructors will provide numerous examples of current educational research that employs semiotic methodology. Participants will prepare a research proposal in their area of expertise. _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Donald J.
