Elisa-- Gordon did a great job of laying out some critical choices. In
order for thinking of language as artifact to be helpful, its always
essential to start rising from this broad abstraction to some concrete
case where such a formulation can be helpful. The genre "level of
aggregation" is at least one way station in such a task. Also, I
recommend Ritva Engestrom's paper in MCA about a year ago (sorry I
do not have copies handy for ref) in which she takes up similar issues
within a CHAT perspective.
