mary, a source i have found most helpful for understanding development
through chat is Jaan Valsiner's "The guided mind" , harvard, 1998 - he
speaks directly to the development of personality, in fact, the subtitle
is "A Sociogenetic approach to personality". some quick quotes -
"still, the psychological phenomena that the person 'lives thought' in his
or her goal oriented ways remain the person's subjective characteristic"
and "persons are always interrelated with their life environments" and
"the developing person is active in one's construction of the personal
world. through sing-mediated imagination, fantasy, and internal
self-dialogues, a person can transcend the immediate, social confines of
any particular context of the here and now" and finally, "the process of
human develoopment takes place in the present". (p. 12)

also, "Change and develoment: Issues of theory, method, and application"
edited by Eric Amsel & K. Ann Renninger, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1997
is a jewel of a collection of recent thoughts on development, including
articles by Robert Siegler, Jaan Valsiner, Michael Cole, Barbara Rogoff &
William Damon. a great volumn for theoretical over-views.
