1. FREE MATERIALS ON V-CHIP AND TV RATINGS
As part of a national campaign to educate parents about the=20
V-Chip TV ratings system, the Henry J. Kaiser Family=20
Foundation is making available a booklet with the results of=20
their survey on how parents feel (and what they know) about=20
TV, the V-Chip, and the TV ratings system. Of special=20
interest is a "Chart Pack," with reproducible, black-and-
white bar graph charts that can be made into overhead=20
transparencies for parent education. Call the Kaiser Family=20
Foundation=92s publications request line at 1-800-656-4533 and=20
request publication #1477, or go to http://www.kff.org.

2. NEW BOOK TURNS ON THE LIGHT
We received this email from Mike Gange, teacher at=20
Fredericton High, Fredericton, New Brunswick:
=20
"John Pungente=92s new book =91More than Meets the Eye=92 is so=20
down to earth, so unpretentious, that it works well as a=20
teacher resource and as a guide for students at the high=20
school level. I liked his story about the TV show Buffy=20
(the Vampire Slayer) and I read it to my grade 12 media=20
studies class. When he was talking about Buffy being a=20
metaphor for life, I could see the lights going on in their=20
eyes, their heads nodding in agreement and their body=20
language saying =91Ahhhh, now I see.=92
=20
"In a written response later on, the answers I got reflected=20
their understanding and their critical thinking.=85So this=20
guy, who has made media his area of study for a couple of=20
decades, managed to reach my kids in one story in a way I=20
have not been able to do all year. Thank you John!"
=20
Until Aug. 31, "More Than Meets the Eye" is available in the=20
United States ONLY through the Center for Media Literacy.=20
Special introductory discount price is $22.95. To order call=20

Don=92t look now, but the start of a new school year is just=20
around the corner. The Center has a new Resource Consultant,=20
Monique Escamilla, who is available to help guide you=20
through the decision-making process about what resources are=20
best for what you want to do with media literacy in the K-12=20
classroom, afterschool programs or church groups. Call her=20
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., California time,=20
at 800-226-9494, ext. 13, or send an email to=20
cml who-is-at medialit.org, including your name, grade level and=20
subject you teach, phone number(s), and the best time for=20
Monique to reach you.

4. NMEC CONFERENCE A ROUSING SUCCESS; PLAN AHEAD FOR 2000=20
AND 2001
Many accolades have been received from attendees of the 1999=20
National Media Education Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota.=20
These conferences are the best professional development=20
opportunity available for teachers of media literacy!=20
For the year 2000, the NMEC organizers are supporting the=20
"SUMMIT 2000: Children, Youth and the Media--Beyond the=20
Millennium" conference in Toronto, May 13-17, as the primary=20
media education event next year, and Americans educators are=20
urged to attend this very important gathering. A special=20
caucus for U.S. attendees will be held every afternoon so=20
that you can connect with your compatriots and share notes.=20
For more information, go to http://www.summit2000.net.
In 2001, the National Media Education Conference will be=20
back in the U.S., with the location to be determined. Plan=20
and budget now for both of these one-of-a-kind professional=20
development opportunities!
