Dear Mike,
I recommend a recent book by Jo Boaler (1997). Experiencing school
mathematics: Teaching styles, sex and setting. Philadelphia: Open
University Press. It reports the results of an ethnographic study
conducted in two (British) working-class high schools (one following a
traditional educational program and the other following a more
reform-oriented program--both in mathematics). She documented some
surprising and interesting differences in students' attitudes toward and
learning as a result of those two different school atmospheres.
