Christine has presented some of my ideas about perception. Maybe some of
you who can receive enriched mail will enjoy my favorite demonstration of
Wahr- and Falschnehmung right in the mail or they will be able to render

The title of my presentation in "English" is:
Truetaking or Falsetaking of What Reality?
The figure combines two principles, the one of impossible figures invented
by Penrose and promulgated by Escher, Gregory, and others in numbers of
variations (playing with incongruities between 3- and 2-dimensional
figurations) and the other of the virtual contour and color, invented by
Schuman and reinvented or propagated later by Kanisza (letting "idealizing"
principles of good continuity and similarity rule over veridicality).
The point is that you certainly perceive something, but not only something
impossible, a twisted frame, but also something not really there, contours
and surface colors or whiteness shades. So do you "take" or "grasp" true or
false?
And the question behind is, why psychologists and philosophers, for
heavens' sake, insist on circularly explaining perception by recourse to
what they call reality in spite of the latter being accessible only by
perception. I'd rather hold the constructions of the mind for equally real
in their proper way and investigate their mutual relations rather than
declaring only one of these realities true and the other as fiction,
sometimes true sometimes erroneous. There's no reason to give absolute
primacy to only one of those realities although, it is true, one is a part
of the other, yet a part capable of changing that other, larger one.
