For those interested in other references on motor development, including
speech and language development, from the self-organization perspective, of
the sort that Gundlach's message refers to, you might have a look at:

L.B. Smith & E. Thelen, Eds., A Dynamic Systems Approach to Development.
Cambridge, MA: MIT Press. 1993. (xviii + 414 pp.) ISBN: 0-262-19333-7.

There are a lot of interesting articles; there is also a companion volume,
with a bit more of a theoretical emphasis, which is, I think, Thelen & Smith.

For links to some themes discussed here, you might also see my review of
the volume (in _Theory & Psychology 6_(2): 352-356, 1996).

The chapter on language development is the one by Tucker & Hirsh-Pasek.

JAY.

PS. If people are interested in my review, which deals with the issue of
alternative paradigms in developmental theory, I could put it on my website
<http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/education/jlemke/index.htm>
for people to look at.
