Leo Van Lier has an article in Applied Linguistics vol 15, no 3,
328-346, called Forks and Hope: Pursuing Understanding in Different
Ways, a reply to the authors in a previous issue on Theory
Construction in SLA, who generally shared the essentially rationalist
epistemology which 'predominates in contemporary SLA/applied
linguistics.' (editor's words) In it he quotes Lewis Carroll's The
Hunting of the Snark at them.
They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care
They pursued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway share;
They charmed it with smiles and soap.
