Marc, You might look at "Confederacy of Dunces: The Tyranny of Compulsory
Schooling" an article by John Taylor Gatto. It appeared in The Sun
magazine about 5 years ago. It connects the invention of higher education,
normal schools, etc. in the late 1800's to Prussian models of education
designed to produce automaton citizens willing to sacrifice themselves for
the good of the fatherland. Gatto also wrote a great book entitled Dumbing
Us Down which I recommend (circa 1993). Hope that helps. roberto
