RESEARCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITY IN MEXICO
Fogarty International Research Program

DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this program is to provide research training to
undergraduate students , graduate students, and faculty members. The
training will take place at three research sites: Instituto Mexicano de
PsiquiatrRa (IMP) in Mexico City, Universidad Nacional Aut\noma de
MJxico (UNAM) in Mexico City, and El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in San
Crist\bal de las Casas (ECOSUR), Chiapas. Participants will work on
research projects with investigators from one of the three sites and
will learn about adapting available research methods for community and
clinical samples of Mexicans and persons of indigenous background. IMP
serves as the principle training site where research is being conducted
on a wide range of topics including immigration, parent/child relations,
substance abuse, suicide, and psychiatric epidemiology. At UNAM,
researchers examine several topics of interest including HIV/AIDS,
parent/child relations, measurement issues, and marital relations. At
ECOSUR, a few participants will work on projects concerning mental
illness and social change in indigenous communities. Most research will
focus on analysis of data that have already been collected. Research
can be applied to student's masters or dissertation theses. Publication
of research will be both facilitated and expected. The training will
start in June and will last three months. Transportation and living
expenses will be covered. In addition, trainees will receive a monthly
stipend for their participation.
REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate & Graduate Student
*member of underrepresented ethnic minority group (i.e.,
American-Indian, African-American, Latino/a)
*ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing Spanish
*3.00 minimum GPA
*majoring in the social and behavioral sciences and related fields
(e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Health
*two letters of recommendation (preferably from professors)
*a copy of most current transcripts
*a one-page personal statement that covers the applicant's background,
qualifications, research interests, reasons for applying, and future
goals.

Faculty
*member of underrepresented ethnic minority group (i.e.,
