If theory has no role in informing professional practice for teachers
then the practice is uninformed and the theory is impractical. There are
certainly many "born" teachers- but professional teachers use what they
know to inform what they do. Sometimes such professional wisdom is so
institutionalized that teachers have a hard timer articulating it-
"everybody does it that way". I found this in New Zealand. In the United
States on the other hand successful whole language teachers have often
had to face the kind of opposition that leads to them being labled as
chaotic so they tend to have thought through how what they know informs
what they do and are thus better able to articulate it.
