announces

CERT Scholars Program in Technology Studies

We are seeking outstanding candidates to pursue graduate studies related to
understanding technology in its full educational, psychological, cultural,
and social context. Successful applicants would be mentored by either of
the following faculty:

Prof. Hank Bromley teaches in the Sociology of Education area (Department of
Educational Leadership and Policy) and is Associate Director of CERT. His
interests lie in education and social change, the politics of technology, and
feminist theory. His book Education/Technology/Power: Educational Computing
as a Social Practice (co-edited with Michael W. Apple) will be released by
SUNY Press in 1998.

Prof. Thomas J. Shuell teaches in the Educational Psychology program
(Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology) and is Director of
CERT. His interests lie in the application of psychological principles of
teaching and learning to appropriate uses of computer-based technologies in
education. He has written extensively on the psychology of learning and
cognition, research on teaching, and the use of technology for instructional
purposes.

The University at Buffalo is the largest and most comprehensive of SUNY's
four university centers. Its Graduate School of Education offers masters
and doctoral degrees in some 20 areas, organized into three departments
(Counseling and Educational Psychology, Educational Leadership and Policy,
and Learning and Instruction), and has extensive linkages with schools in
the city of Buffalo and surrounding communities. CERT Scholars may pursue
studies in any of GSE's degree programs. (GSE does not at present offer a
degree specifically in Educational Technology, but we are about to begin
offering an Advanced Certificate in that area, which may be obtained along
with any GSE degree.) CERT will assist candidates with the process of
applying for admission to their chosen department.

CERT is able to provide financial support to a small number of especially
promising students committed to obtaining a Ph.D., either in the form of a
University Fellowship (entailing full waiver of tuition, health insurance,
and a stipend of up to $16,500) or a graduate assistantship (tuition
waiver, health insurance, and $8000 stipend in exchange for half-time work
for CERT). We anticipate renewing any such funding annually for up to four
years.
