Bill, If you're referring to the competence/performance distinction in
linguistics, diferent views of this distinction are important in the
development of modern linguistics, and particularly of sociolinguistics.
There are a number of different discussions on the changing views of what
this distinction means, but one very useful one is by Ronald Wardhaugh in
_An Introduction to Sociolinguistics_ , Blackwell, 1986.
