I would like to express my thanks to Katie Vann who took over
the review of the XMCA collective review of the book I co-edited entitled
Contexts for Learning. What I like about your review, Katie, (in addition
to my relief at not having to take on that huge task myself) is that it
both looks backward (to Vygotsky's theoretical roots in Marx) and forward
(to the next generation of sociocultural research on schooling). (Sorry
for being so simplistic about time here after the long and complex
discussion about time--but I'm not ready to integrate that discussion into
my informal discourse yet.) It is truly gratifying to get a fresh
perspective on this volume--something that someone who spent several years
working on the minute details really has trouble doing.

I would also like to thank all the many xmca'ers who contributed to this
collective review. The downloaded files rivaled the book manuscript in
length and, in places, in thoughtfulness. Thanks also to Mike Cole who
suggested the review in the first place and who sponsored it throughout
the process.
