Extended educational day

Is anyone aware of research supporting an extended school day (K-12)? We
are interested in the possibility of a four day week, but would like to
explore research either pro or con on the issue of learning times and the
possible affect they have on the learning environment.
In a time of financial pressures increasingly shaping learning
environments, the impact of economic solutions to educational problems is
interesting...
