Hi,
My name is Melanie Hahn and the following information speaks to my
professional interests.
I am a Korean American educator interested in Biculturalism and
Biculturalism of School-age populations kindergarten through post-secondary
levels; Second Language Teaching and Learning Pedagogy; Academic Literacy
Acquisition; Teacher Education; and Multicultural Education.
I have a Masters of Education in Languages and Literacy; Harvard
Graduate School of Education with concentrations in second language
acquisition, bilingual education, and applied linguistics. I taught
intensive English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) to recently arrived Korean
adult immigrants, and have been program directors for several academic
literacy programs for immigrant/refugee students. I graduated in 1995
(December) with a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of
California, Berkeley. I pursued an interdisciplinary degree in Education
with Sociology, Linguistics, American Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies,
History, and Anthropology. Dissertation topic: the academic literacy needs
of college-age Korean American immigrant writers and the psychosocial and
sociocultural factors that influence the acquisition of English academic
literacy skills for the il-chom-ose or 1.5 Korean American adolescent
immigrant students. Graduated Phi Beta Kappa. I was recentlyy appointed
to be Faculty and CLAD Chair of Dominican College's School of Education.
My professional conferences that I organized throughout the State of
California were on topics that include: Korean American Identity; The
College Board's Asian Language Bilingual Testing Preparation; Teaching and
Learning Asian Languages in California; The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
and Education for Asian Pacific Americans; Challenging Stereotypes of Asian
Pacific Americans; and Affirmative Action for Asian Americans.
