I am a graduate student in the community-social psychology program at the
University of Maryland Baltimore County where I am working to prepare
myself as a scholar-activist in hopes of contributing (even if minutely)
to social transformation in impoverished communities. Additionally, I
study with Robert Serpell (Program Director of the Applied Developmental
Psychology program) at UMBC whenever possible because of my interests in
literacy and culture; he also introduced me to this list. I am
particularly interested in the interaction between individual psychology
and social systems, for there is always a subjective aspect that
accompanies any real change. For example, an individual's sense of
empowerment, literacy, and sociopolitical awareness shape forms of
participation in community development. I hope to work in
interdisciplinary, intercultural teams doing action research. XMCA is a
valuable resource for this endeavor.
