The Research Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of
English will hold its midwinter conference, "Sociocultural View of
Literacy: Creating Communities of Learners," at the DoubleTree Hotel in
Los Angeles/Westwood and at the University of California, Los Angeles
February 20-22, 1998. Enrollment will be capped at approximately 200
participants; early registration is encouraged. Information about how to
register for the conference appears at the end of this announcement.
This conference, like the theory that informs its title, hopes to
expand the focus from teaching to learning and will pay special attention
to the way participation, talk, and interaction is organized for all
participants. Thus, in the tradition of previous Midwinter Conferences, a
variety of pre-conference and conference activities will be offered to help
create a community of learners that allow a range of ways of participating
and learning. The warm, sunny southern California climate is this year's
setting.
Pre-conference Discussion
All registrants will have the opportunity to participate in the
pre-conference e-mail discussion which will begin in January, 1998.
Through this discussion we hope to identify themes and issues that can be
addressed and elaborated throughout the conference.
Pre-conference Workshops
Two pre-conference workshops will be offered Friday afternoon,
February 20, 1998. These workshops are designed to offer participants
opportunities to have more focused discussion on the themes of the
conference and to develop their theoretical and methodological tool kits:
Workshop #1 Friday, UCLA, 12:00-2:00 p.m.
Introduction to Sociocultural theories
This workshop will discuss sociocultural theories of
learning and the implication for classroom practice.
Workshop #2 Friday, UCLA, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Conducting Classroom Based Research
This workshop links reflective practice to thoughtful
classroom research. Thus, this workshop will assist participants in
developing classroom-based research and appropriate methodologies.
Registration cost for one workshop is $20. Participants may register for
both workshops.
Conference Program
The conference program attempts to continually link theory/practice
and practice/theory. Essential to the success of the conference is the
need for a rich mix of language/literacy researchers, graduate students,
teacher/researchers, practicing classroom teachers, and curriculum
coordinators. Several panels of practicing classroom teachers will be
included during which time the panelists will discuss the implications of
the conference talks on the practices of the classroom.
