I am a professor emeritus,Transitional Studies, Monroe Community College
(Rochester,NY) and am now living in rural Colorado. I find the works and
ideas of Vygotsky, Luria, Bakhtin and others in the field of
cognitive/metacognitive theories have helped me personalize my instruction.
Their works have underscored the phenomenon that "performance precedes
competence" and that the general development of the human mind & sign is
from the "outside" to the "inside," sociohistorial.
Studies investiagating Expert & Novice differences in learning also have
helped me become a more effective learning facilitator. These studies
reinforce Luria's idea that the mind is an artifact and not a static
entitiy.
Besides teaching and learning from my students for over 33 years, I've had
the opportunity to present many of these ideas and practices at
conferences, such as the annual conference of the Institute for the Study
of Postsecondary Education ( SUNY at New Paltz,NY) and The National
Conference on College Teaching and Learning at Jacksonville, FL.
Although I have retired from full-time teaching, I have not retired from
teacheing and learning from others. I hope to be able to learn and share
ideas with others in the field who are still very active in the area of
education, particularly as it relates to the postsecondary level.
I have a special interest in the community college level since I've spent
a goodly portion of my teaching and learning at this level, both here in
rural Colorado and in Upstate New York .
