Thanks Eva and Vera for your comments. Meaning is something people make,
and in this sense is not something they "have" in a uniform way. People
"have sense" in the sense that they have their own unique amalgam of
the potential meanings, the "semiosphere."

This view deeply assumes an active subject and the need for constant
negotiation within heterogeneous "layers" of constraints. I take
genres to refer to identifiable-ish units of socio-culturally embodied
constraints.
