Some of you may have heard that Dean Richard Saller of the University of
Chicago's Division of Social Sciences is recommending to President Hugo
Sonnenschein that Chicago's Department of Education be terminated. My
former graduate advisor, George Hillocks, has asked that I inform people of
this development so that they may, if interested, write letters of concern
and protest. The appropriate parties to write are:

President Hugo Sonnenschein
The University of Chicago
5801 S. Ellis
Chicago, IL 60637

Dean Richard Saller
Social Sciences 110
1126 E. 59th St.
Chicago, IL 60637

I see this decision as having greater impact than simply the closing of one
department in one university. Every move of this type justifies the next.
A high profile university such as Chicago often sets precedents for others
to follow--if Chicago can do it, so can we. I'll not harp on this matter
because I think the problems are self-evident. But I will ask you to write
if you share my concern with the future of our field, and the impact this
closure may have on it.
