resistance & representation:
reconceptualizing
early childhood education in
research, theory & practice

The 6th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference provides a forum for
researchers, teachers, advocates, non-academic scholars and others
pursuing critical and alternative perspectives in early childhood
education. The conference seeks to serve as a congenial site for
provocative conversation and critically oriented exploration of the
contradictions and possibilities of early childhood theory and
practice and to provide a common ground for those who seek to
radically change the contexts in which children learn and develop.
Conference Theme: The 1996 conference focuses on resistance and
representation as political and pedagogical practice in early
childhood. Questions include: "How do we represent ourselves; our
ideas, teaching, and research? " "How do we choose to think and
write about our colleagues; the curriculum; the children and
families with whom we work; and the experiences of early childhood
education?" "Who exercises power in ECE and why?" "Who practices
resistance in ECE and why?"
Session Topics: 1) Resistance within hierarchical power relations
(theory/practice; curriculum/pedagogy; program/government;
researcher/ worker; teacher/administrator; teacher/child;
agency/funding source; teacher/parent, etc.); 2) The location and
exercise of power and resistance within families and institutions
and throughout the social world; 3) Agency and choice in early
childhood practice; or 4) Other topics of timely interest. Analysis
of practices of resistance and representation through the
theoretical perspectives of postmodernism, feminism, queer theory,
critical theory, and post colonial theory are encouraged.
Session formats: Interdisciplinary, problem-based panels (120
minutes); workshops on current issues (90 minutes);
work-in-progress roundtable's (60 minutes); or alternative options.
Proposal Submission
Proposals should be no more than two pages in length. Define the
topic to be discussed--including its theoretical and practical
contexts --and indicate its relevance to resistance. Proposals
should include: *names and affiliations of all presenters;
including contacts person's phone number/email and address
*brief title capturing the theme or topic of the session
*proposed session format, including provisions for
participant involvement
*fifty-word abstract for inclusion in the program
Proposals are due on June 28. Send 3 copies of the proposal and 2
stamped, self-addressed envelopes to:

General Information
Location: Meetings will be held on the University of
Wisconsin-Madison campus at the J. F. Friedrich Center, 1950 Willow
Drive, Madison, WI. 53706. Parking will be available upon request
at the Friedrich Center where some will be staying and at the
InnTowner-Best Western. Those for whom child care is a concern
should contact M. Bloch in advance at 608-263-4673 or Email
BlochM who-is-at Macc.Wisc.Edu and we will try to arrange for students to do
child care, depending upon need.
Lodging: Accommodations are available at the Friedrich Center or
the InnTowner-Best Western. Currently the hotels range from $42-64
for a single in the two hotel sites; $46-74 for a double, and $54
to $84 for triples. All lodging inquiries should be directed to
