Hello Stephanie-- Yes, there is ample data to show that newborns are
treated according to adult conceptions of gender, not their personal
characteristics.

To anyone intersted, a fuller treatment of the way that prolepsis works
is contained in a review article on "culture and development" in the
Bornstein and Lamb (1992?) Advanced Textbook in Child Development.
