There are many other sources, of course. Perhaps others will
contribute some of their favorites. Among especially thoughtful
accounts that I have admired are, from the more macro perspective,
Basil Bernstein (see cites in TP) and from the more micro, Aaron
Cicourel (perhaps someone can give references for Aaron's work).
There is also a classic treatment of the problem in Talcott
Parsons, who more or less defined the issue in its modern form.
