Another of my favorites, which I use sometimes in seminars, is
Peter McLaren's _Schooling as Ritual Performance_, an ethnographic
study of a working class school in Toronto with interesting elements
of culture (Azorean Portuguese) and religion (Catholic) as well as
the general analysis and a lot of richly reported description and
quotations in the students' own words.
The work of Michael Apple, esp. _Education and Power_ provides
some framework in macro-social theory directly related to specific
accounts of cultures of resistance (or working class youth cultures
generally) in schools. The framework may be a little narrow by
today's perspectives, but it's not a bad starting point. JAY.
