more small group/culture

In my earlier message I was apparently too cryptic about what I am
looking for re small group cultures in activity settings. Briefly:
Our group creates afterschool activities in various institutions
that go by the name of The 5th Dimension (and related names). I
have written about these as microcultures. One such article is in
the Forman et al volume currently being collectively commented
on by xmca-ites.

In the current phase of our work in the setting I most often spend
time in, we have expanded our responsibility to include double
our usual area and a different kind of activity which is referred to
by Boys and girls Club personel as "the library" where homework,
board games, and other "stuff" happens. kids are free to move between
the 5thD and the libarary, which are spatially linked vis a vis the
rest of the club.

One issue I am worrying is how to understand the borders of the 5th
D. One kind of/part of the border is the library side of the room. So
I am looking for ways to characterize qualitatively distinct features
of actions in the two physical locales that would help me to understand
the way they are mutually consitutive. There is a lot more to it than
that, but that is the general problematic. Angel forwarded me some
Jim Heap refs that look highly relevant.

I will report back about what I collect to xmca later about this assuming
there is some interest in the general issues.
