Thanks Mike for mentioning Padden's work. There is also
a very valuable, but not widely available body of work by
an Australian (AusSL is not the same as ASL but another case
of the same family of languages), Trevor Johnston, U of Sydney,
Dept of Linguistics. He is the hearing child of a deaf family,
native bilingual in AusSL and English, with considerable insight
into (and social access to) the informal uses of sign I alluded
to where the distinctive features seem to be most prominent.
