Many years ago a friend of mine, a native of Brooklyn, told me about
her experience teaching kindergarten in Buffalo, NY. She was informed
that whether she liked it or not the kids had to say the pledge every
morning. She figured they'd never understand what it was about, but
hey, she didn't want to fight with her supervisors, so she complied.
At Christmas they had an all-school assembly program at which everyone
said the pldege. Only then did she realize that hers was the only class
in the school that said the pledge with a Brooklyn accent!
