That Lessing quote was a superbly chosen thought for our times, Lara.
Thanks for the rich material for reflection. What Lessing described for
the turn of the 20th century can already be read in the inscriptions and
socio-architectural structure of Uruk, 5000 years ago. Uruk -- where formal
schooling emerged as a cornerstone of the authoritarian, male dominated,
lifeworlds we still inhabit. The goal of schooling was to create cadres of
scribes, in the service of the King/Priest, who collected taxes from their
grain, part of which was used for festivals of overconsumption to elaborate
adoration of the goddess. To me, the power system she describes is baked
into the system from at least the time agriculture became an essential part
of human social/species reproduction.

Doris Lessing's thoughts arrived in my mail cue 2 minutes after I had gone
to the AERA site to see what the overall theme was.
*Cultivating Equitable Education for the 21st century.*

-*Cultivating* is what agri *culturalists *do. Cultivating minds is a
phrase routinely encountered in current development and learning discourse.
-*Equitable* signals a focus on providing all people with an educational
experience sufficient to insure a fair chance at a long life and liberty and
wellbeing (to use the modern lingo). The intellectual tradition of
viewing schools/classroom as gardens also has ancient advocates.
-Education as word is itself split in its meaning:

*The word "education" is derived from the Latin word ēducātiō ("A breeding,
a bringing up, a rearing") from ēducō ("I educate, I train") which is
related to the homonym ēdūcō ("I lead forth, I take out; I raise up, I
erect") from ē- ("from, out of") and dūcō ("I lead, I conduct").*

-Education is what AERA is about and it is split too: between breeding,
training and drawing forth, different processes the meaning of which cannot
be determined outside of the system of activity itself.

-21st century is a mis-leading horizon. It might have been forward looking
in 2016 but now it should be "for the post-covid,
post BLM#metoo, post George Floyd, mixed with the slower burning crises
associated with global warming, poverty, and mass migration."

What do cultural historical, sociocutural developmentalist/educators have to
offer in terms of potentially implementable strategies for clear, if
not initially transformative change in the organization of schooling for
the last 79 years of the 21st century? A symposium that tackled this
question might be worth travelling a long way to participate in. Or
watching via the marvelous new media that are as much as part of the problem
as the solution. Whatever AERA arranges. Besides, we can use the money we
spent last year in a confused search for connectivity to attend this
year for free.... i am pretty sure.
