Annalisa - such a rich, complex text from you - though, as usual.

i think that Nuthall's work reflects Bateson's cybernetic epistemology of learning as a very much reclusive activity - thought not as explicitly purposive as your example.

and yes, we can't help but to learn - a continual process - whether painful or pleasurable - something we like or don't like - and stochastic in process - which is also one of Nuthall's point of illumination.

and the Edelman you want is Gerald Edelman of Bright Air, Brilliant Fire.
