Made much sense indeed :)
Not so sure about your concern that Crawford ignores the 20th century. The
examples concerning stop and frisk laws, gender bias in corporate culture,
etc. seem to me to do the trick of highlighting how bias has played out
and been replicated in machine learning/systems.
Understand your concern about lack of awareness. I myself am coming at all
this from a position of ignorance/inexperience that I find quite worrying
(why is that 'we' don't all know all these things?!!!). That's probably
why my response to Crawford's talk is more enthusiastic. The more
talks/explanations that help highlight these issues, the better, and the
more they can be incorporated into discussions with different communities.
