Henry:

One useful thing Peirce teaches us is to think of the pragmatic fruit of
our belief rather than the truth conditions.

So, Peirce taught logic at Johns Hopkins. Remember, this was during the
revolutionary reconstruction of the South--and in Baltimore.
In one of his classes, he began with a demonstration of the need to replace
Aristotelian logic. He used this syllogism:

All men have equal political rights.
Negroes are men.
Therefore, negroes have equal political rights with white people.

Since the conclusion was absurd, Peirce argued, Aristotelian logic must be
fundaementally inadequate.
