FIGURE 8 (S504F): Pseudoconceptual reasoning within an associative complex

It seemed that the five-year-old participant in Figure 8 (S504F) was operating with a stable notion of the concept of “colour”, at least up until this point: she had started out by sorting one block at a time into groups of blocks of the same colour, but then she would not include the cev trapezoid in her group of orange blocks. She offered no explanation for this block’s exclusion except to insist that it was “different” (it is possible that it was because the size of the orange cev trapezoid is so markedly different from that of the other orange blocks). Her exclusion of this block was even more remarkable given that she had worked her way slowly and methodically through the entire set, and this block seemed also to prevent her from placing the yellow blocks together.
