dear all

given employment rules, you need to know that if Ian says anything he can be fired - this is the way 'academia' works here... Is it really any different anywhere else?

Catch 22 says that if the employer accuses you, you must be guilty until proved innocent, and if you protest your innocence, then you are guilty of bringing your institution (equals its management) into ' disrepute' at least until such time as the institution is found 'guilty' which is delayed to nearly infinity.

finally in the rare event that you are found innocent, any compensation deal lays involves a no disclosure contractual clues that men's its terms re secret... Under contrct lw you lose your compensation if you tell your colleagues about it.

Hey, that's academic freedom 2013....

Julian

Here's a short article in Times Higher Education about Parker's suspension: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=26&storycode=421442&c=1. Here's a link to the full letter about protest efforts, from student China Mills: http://southernpsychologies.wordpress.com/2012/10/06/protesting-ian-parkers-suspension/.

And here's a Lord of the Rings meme photo related to his suspension (http://memegenerator.net/instance/27933805):

Obviously, information regarding the suspension is scarce, and as far as I can tell Ian Parker himself has either chosen not to or been told not to comment. This makes it hard to know what's going on, although it seems to me that secrecy and silence surrounding an institution's labor and suspension practices are generally bad for everyone.
