RE: [xmca] Re: British Journal of Education, Society & Behavioural Science (BJESBS)

I thought this sounded familiar.... BERA sent this message to its members a few months back:

>From the BERA Office

Dear BERA member,

We wish to make you aware that a journal has been launched with a title very similar to the British Educational Research Journal.  We want you to be clear that the new journal, the British Journal of Educational Research, has no connection with BERA.  Further details about the organisation that publishes it can be found on the following link: http://www.sciencedomain.org/

The use of “British” in the journal’s title is ambiguous, as can be seen from the list of editors, none of whom are from the UK.

You may be approached to review an article from the publication.  We would advise that you look at the journal’s website, before taking any decision.

Yours sincerely,

Mark

A little checking reveals that this is the new name of what was originally called BJER, British J. of Educational Research, which is NOT the well known BERJ, British Educational Research Journal. I suspect the publishers of the latter may have demanded the change to the newer name (BJESBS).

The publisher appears to be an entity, ScienceDomain International, which purports to be supporting open access academic publishing, with peer review. However, I suspect it may be a scam.

While charges to authors for journal publication do occur in heavily funded areas of the natural sciences (charged to their grants), a solicitation of publication for a fee certainly raises questions of perceived conflict of interest with maintaining high standards in peer review. An open access model normally operates by making small charges to many readers, rather than large ones to authors.

It happens from time to time that unscrupulous profiteers attract affiliation of scholars, even senior scholars, with glowing promises, and sometimes substantial payments, while concealing the actual financial workings of the journal or publishing organization. With an entirely online setup it is probably possible to circumvent the usual scrutiny of new print publishing businesses.

I have written to two of the listed members of the editorial team (the first two), one is a junior lecturer in science education, and the other is a very senior academic from Finland. It will be interesting to see what they have to say.

JAY.
