I would recommend you google Anna Sfard who talks about "identity"  "learning" and "communication" as a single process.  She has a website where many of her articles are posted.
She is focusing on math teaching and the critical recognition that identity is intimately tied into learning.
Her elaboration of the term "identity" in her many articles and her elaboration of the term "commognitive" would be a good resource to reflect on the mental health of learners as a sociocultural perspective.
