Good question.

You can make it a private network, which I have done, but I am not sure
who still has access. 

It is a lot like Blackboard but with additional features.

Ah, i see, just google ning and join. Then create subgroups. Will this
pass IRB scrutiny in terms of who has access to subgroup info? For
example, google owns google group posts.
