Exploring the Role of Philanthropy in Virtual Worlds

Imagine spending your morning building a new city, having lunch with four
friends from different continents, and walking through the halls of The
Library of Congress, all without leaving your living room. Virtual worlds
make all this and more possible. The MacArthur Foundation is exploring how
to be helpful in advancing the use of virtual worlds for social benefit.
Today, MacArthur president Jonathan Fanton announced a series of events that
will broadly consider the role of philanthropy in virtual worlds. Read the

Advancing Justice in Africa
The trial of Charles Taylor, the former dictator of Liberia, began in early
June, under the auspices of the United Nations-backed Special Court for
Sierra Leone<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=ghJWL0OzFaKJL8I&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>.
Taylor was indicted in 2003, but received safe haven in Nigeria until 2006
when he was turned over by Nigerian authorities at the request of Liberia's
president. Supported by MacArthur, the Nigerian Civil Liberties
Organisation, Human Rights
Watch<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=cnJOLOMjF8JGIZK&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>,
and Fédération Internationale des Ligues des Droits de
l'Homme<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=jkI2K9PLLgKTKiL&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>
have,
with local partners, advocated vigorously for Taylor's surrender and will
monitor closely the proceedings of the trial. The International Center for
Transitional Justice<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=hiJYK3ODIfLVJhJ&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>,
another Foundation grantee, has been active in both Sierra Leone and Liberia
to help establish Truth and Reconciliation Commissions and to assist with
the activities of the Special Court.

       Celebrating Creative and Effective Institutions

This year's eight winners of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective
Institutions<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=doJQIRNqFhJMJ1K&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>gathered
in early June to share their experiences and strategies with each
other and with members of the Chicago nonprofit community. Despite their
range of goals and missions, this year's award winners found common ground
on issues such as strategic planning and board development. At an awards
ceremony that closed the two-day seminar, MacArthur President Jonathan
Fanton said, "The institutions we honor today have demonstrated the courage
to push the boundaries of the possible, explore uncharted terrain, imagine
the unknown, and test new models for pursuing elusive goals. That is the
creative dimension. But they are also effective – applying practical
wisdom, balanced judgment, determined competence, and fierce energy to
address complex problems facing their communities, their countries, and the
world." Read the award

  Preserving Affordable Rental Housing

Chicago-area real estate, finance, philanthropic, nonprofit, and government
leaders this month unveiled an ambitious effort to save 75,000 affordable
rental homes in Cook County by 2020. MacArthur committed $15 million to the
action plan, called The Preservation
Compact<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=juI2JhPSKcLWIoI&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>.
According to Foundation President Jonathan Fanton, "Virtually all of us, at
some time in our lives, have benefited from our nation's stock of rental
houses. Affordable rental homes are often essential to recent college
graduates on entry-level salaries, newlyweds saving for their first home,
temporarily displaced workers, seniors on fixed incomes, low-income
families. Many people rent by choice, but for the majority of renters who
have limited economic means, renting is a necessity." Read the press
release.<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=ghKWI0ODLnISK8J&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>

Economic Impact of the Arts

The nonprofit arts industry generates over $1 billion of organization and
audience expenditures in Chicago, according to new report released by
Americans for the Arts. The report, Arts & Economic Prosperity
III<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=cdKOIOMoHkLOL0I&s=egITI2OBKaJHKQPuEmF&m=jrKRKWOCJkL4G>,
includes data from 156 communities and regions in all 50 states. MacArthur
provided support for the Chicago portion of the study. The Foundation also
provides $5.5 million per year in assistance to Chicago arts and culture
organizations. Foundation President Jonathan Fanton said, "We do this
because we know that the arts are not optional luxuries, but central to the
human experience. They lift our spirits, inspire, inform, and challenge us
to new heights. They are critical to every successful metropolitan area." Read
