  Deadline Note: The pre-application form must be received by 5:00 P.M. on
July 1 or January 5. When due dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the
pre-application is due at 5:00 P.M. on the next business day. The Boston
Foundation will accept only one pre-application per organization each year.
Only invited proposals will be accepted. Uninvited proposals will be
returned to the sender. Amount Note: The Boston Foundation does not
currently make multi-year funding commitments. Most grants are allocated
only for a 12-month time period, with renewal funding requested by
applicants on an annual basis. Eligibility: The Boston Foundation supports
projects and organizations that serve the Greater Boston area. The
foundation welcomes pre-application submissions from tax-exempt 501(c)(3)
organizations located in the Greater Boston area. If the organization is new
and not yet tax-exempt, it may submit an application with the assistance of
a tax-exempt organization that has agreed to serve as its fiscal agent.

In general, the Boston Foundation funds projects and programs only in
following cities and towns: Arlington, Ashland, Bedford, Belmont, Beverly,
Boston, Braintree, Brookline, Burlington, Cambridge, Canton, Chelsea,
Cohasset, Concord, Danvers, Dedham, Dover, Duxbury, Everett, Framingham,
Gloucester, Hamilton, Hanover, Hingham, Holbrook, Hull, Lexington, Lincoln,
Lynn, Lynnfield, Malden, Manchester, Marblehead, Marshfield, Medfield,
Medford, Melrose, Middleton, Millis, Milton, Nahant, Natick, Needham,
Newton, Norfolk, North Reading, Norwell, Norwood, Peabody, Pembroke, Quincy,
Randolph, Reading, Revere, Rockland, Rockport, Salem, Saugus, Scituate,
Sharon, Sherborn, Somerville, Stoneham, Sudbury, Swampscott, Topsfield,
Wakefield, Walpole, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, Wellesley, Wenham, Weston,
Westwood, Weymouth, Wilmington, Winchester, Winthrop, and Woburn. However,
the Boston Foundation will fund statewide advocacy or policy research when
there is a strong connection with and influence upon its Greater Boston

  Abstract: The Boston Foundation invests in nonprofit organizations in
order to build a vibrant, cohesive, and interconnected community that
provides access to fundamental resources and opportunities for all citizens.

Through its Out of School Time funding area, the Boston Foundation will give
high priority to the following programs:
1. Systems development and capacity building (largely through
intermediaries)
2. New or existing high quality programs, primarily in Boston, seeking to
expand the number of children and youth served, with sound strategies for
resource development, and, where applicable, coordinated with the academic
goals of the schools (priority is given to organizations that deliver
programs at a significant scale)
3. Programs that specifically seek to connect the learning goals of schools
with after-school programs (particularly in literacy and mathematics)
4. Advocacy, technical assistance, and training programs (largely through
intermediaries)

The foundation will give lower priority to the following programs:
1. Support for ongoing activities not linked to a strategy
2. Programs serving a small number of children or youth
