I fully agree with Mary that "misogynist sexist objectification of
any author or their work is absolutely
unacceptable on this list", and Ricardo will be the first to be
embarrassed.
But the point has been made, and we need not all comment on this any
further. Rather, we can learn from this:
From a cultural-historical perspective, many on this list have been
brought up in an era, when sexist, classist, and racist comments were
being made by many. Changes have been brought about because of the
courage of people like Mary. At the same time, not all cultures have
changed and developed a sensibility as ours (Canadian). We are not
machines, computers, which you reprogram. Ricardo as all of us is a
human being, whose patterned actions (practices) change in the course
of experience, that is, slowly.
This, too, is a cultural-historical perspective, about the
relationship between individual and collective, historical change,
and the rate at which changes occur at the different levels and
thereby mutually support each other.
So I suggest that we not engage in Ricardo bashing, but move on from
here with a lesson learned. I am sure Ricardo will monitor his speech/
writing.

I have never seen any sexism on this list before, and I truly believe
that
the great people I met at Sevilla are embarrassed by the language of
this
posting. We all have a real contribution to make, so please don't go
away.
If you are really are still brassed off, write to me personally, and
blow
off steam....:) (And you know that "guys" is now a gender neutral term,
don't you!)

If we are ever going to move forward in this field towards a body of
knowledges that is anything other than over-determined by a particularly
gendered history this kind of signifying practice can not be condoned.
You have almost managed in practical terms to have a private men's club,
with a few women relegated to the wings. If this really is the
intent, then
be clear about it and the rest of us can move elsewhere.
