NT Times, front page story, Nov. 9 (my brief summary):

Rich Colleges Receiving Richest Share of US AID.

Directress of student aid at Cal State U in Fresno can't figure out the
logic of how W and his friends give out money to students.

"Poverty is hardly a rarity among the CSUF studens. Many come from families
working in the fields nearby, on farmes where students spend their summer
and winter vacations harvesting peaches and sugar beets to stay in school.

About three hours and a world away sits Stanford. Far few of its students
are poor, yet the federal government gives it about 7 times as much money
to help each one of them through college under one program, 28 times as
much in another and almost 100 times as much in a third, GOVERNMENT DATA
SHOW."

Similar discrepancies emerge across the nation.................

I need a weatherman to tell me if it is going to rain on the long walk
I hope to take this afternoon, but it sure doesn't take one to tell me
which way the wind is blowing.
