How One Spammer Pays for College

There is a university student in my area that has his spam server running on
a beefy Dell Latitude C840 notebook and a modified Linksys USB
wi-fi/Pringles can antenna kludge in the back of his mini-van. Claims no
one pays much attention to his ratty van with cardboard boxes of "junk"
camouflage in the back. He whacks into some poor randomly pre-chosen SOB's
home DSL wireless router (usually with the factory default settings still in
place), starts up his spam server and takes a walk down the street and
catches a bus home. Computer runs forever he claims (up to 48 hours at a
time when "parked") since he has 5 deep cycle car batteries wired up to this
thing under the middle seats with a 12v auto adapter and a power isolator
switch so his van battery doesn't drain dead. His server would spam out
through the wi-fi quietly from the curb until his server got a blacklist
rejection. At that point the server suspends the spew and emails him that
it has been blocked (it also e-mails him once per hour to tell him the link
is up and running or that it is done). He would then get a ride from a
roomy to go pick up his van when the DSL IP was blacklisted. Then he would
drive over to the next poor SOB's .11x he scouted earlier in the week and
resume his spam from that curbside location, rinse and repeat the cycle
until all his spam "orders" were filled. He described his operation in one
of the university's "underground" wardriving newsletters as a great way to
pay for college with no work required...... =/
