Thanks for the clarification, Bill. I think I confused things here. Of
course, submit proposals for symposia! A theme can be helpful for people who
would like to present their work but are not organizing a symposium. A theme
is intended to be a guideline, not something fixed in stone.
The question seems to be whether the theme should be used in evaluation of
individual proposals. Of course, good proposals will be accepted. We can
have a "miscellaneous" panel. But in the event that we get overwhelmed with
good proposals :) I would use the theme to help me prioritize which would be
accepted.
If we can get membership numbers up, then we'll have enough slots not to
worry.

SIG theme. A theme would not have invited speakers. Perhaps the source of
the confusion is that one possible administrative advantage of the theme is
to guide the review of aera proposals to form a symposia ONLY IF no symposia
are proposed. In my conversation with Eugene in New Orleans, he indicated
that this was the case last year. I hope I am not mistaken -- can anyone
verify this?
It is far more preferable that you propose symposia. Please do. I do not
know how many slots are available at the present time, but it is clear that
the number grows with CHSIG membership, so please sign up and enjoy the
benefits!
