Thanks Bill. These seem like wonderful excuses to put aside the two
dissertations I am required to read for upcoming defenses........djc

Don,

Thanks for the note on criteria. It resonates with me, also. You might be
interested in reading the following:

Following a read of the Vann and Bowker piece posted on the mca home page,
I ran down

Vann, K. & Bowker, G. G. (2001). Instrumentalizing the truth of
practice. Social Epistemology, 15(3), 247-262.

I think it is a better piece that the posted, although it was choppy read
for me. It does trace the commodification of CoPs through Wenger, but it
does a better of job of presenting development of the idea by Lave.

I also chased down Winkelmann, C. L. (1991). Social acts and social
systems: Community as metaphor. Linguistics and Education, 3, 1-29.

This is a very strong paper. Winkelmann presents a strong challenge to the
CoP metaphor and a convincing argument for "collective". After my first
pass through it, I concluded that Yrjo's model is more about a collective
than a community. This piece is worth a read.
