an undertaking requiring unusual exertion

Not to be a slave to publication -- perhaps in male-ish typical style, even to
rebel against the academic expectation of peer-reviewed scholarship -- one can
post to xmca, have a good time, and forget the rites of tenure. Life is too
short anyway -- or perhaps one's institution does not recognize tenure, so
what difference does it make? Let the zipfs fall where they may. No matter
how hard one tries to break the rule, it just becomes the next rule, or more of
the same rule, or perhaps the generalization of what was before. Fail to post,
just slide down in ranking. Or post more mischieviously and slide up. The
song remains the same.

c'est destin. c'est la culture.

=====
"One of life's quiet excitements is to stand somewhat apart from yourself and watch yourself softly become the author of something beautiful."
[Norman Maclean in "A river runs through it."]
