2nd Nordic Baltic Conference on
activity theory and sociocultural research

September 7-9, 2001, Ronneby, Sweden

There has been a growing interest in activity theory and
cultural-historical research in a number of areas, with a clear tendency of
applying this approach in the most dynamic and rapidly developing areas of
critical importance for the society in general. The approach has its roots
in Russian psychology of the 1920's. Today it transcends both geographic
and disciplinary boundaries and is applied across a wide range of domains
all over the world. More and more researchers and practitioners find this
approach useful when dealing with complex phenomena of social practice and
their developmental transformations.
Nordic and Baltic countries have a strong history of theoretical and
practical work based on activity theory and cultural-historical psychology
in areas, such as education, transformations of work and organizations,
human-computer interaction, and so forth. In accordance with international
ambition to merge the two organizations of activity theory (ISCRAT) and the
Society for Sociocultural Studies (for more information see
www.iscrat.org), this second Nordic-Baltic conference will be devoted to
activity theory and sociocultural research.
Nordic-Baltic conferences on activity theory and sociocultural research aim
at bringing together those who work within this approach or are interested
in extending their conceptual frameworks by relating them to activity
theory and cultural-historical research.

The Second Nordic Baltic conference builds on the success of the first
event, held in Helsinki 1997. The First Nordic-Baltic conference provided a
forum for exchanging ideas, experiences, and opinions and revealed a number
of common interests, problems, and possibilities for cooperation among
researchers and practitioners in Nordic and Baltic countries.
