Dr. Matusov: Interestingly, a copy of a poem was given to distribute to your class. Yesterday was International Women's Day and there was no attention given. Honestly, I did not even know until today, 3/9/01 after reading a small article in the newspaper. The attached Internet commentary indicates the United Nations and some countries recognize the day as a National Holiday. How many days in the United States do we recognize or celebrate the praise of women? Outside of Mother's Day, I don't think there is any. Even the dark skinned community get Martin Luther King Day, which recognizes the celebration of both men and women through it as part of the culture. Women and children are really undervalued in more ways than we may be aware of. However, maybe someone can put a note on their calendar for next year to start raising consciousness a little earlier next year. The Wellness Conference could be a starting point giving a global approach to our collective consciousness and, therefore, each person's well being. Thanks for taking the time to read this e-mail message and the attached. Janice Bakow (Temporary Secretary for Maryanne Bowers in School of Education)
