David was one of my first teachers when I entered graduate
school in the Sociolinguistics program at Georgetown. He was
a great teacher and a wonderful friend. He opened my eyes to
the need for including culture and society in studies of
language and is one of the people I tryu to emulate when
I teach.
We lost contact after we ach left Georgetown in the
pre-e-mail days. I am deeply saddened to hear this news.
